To calm my confusion I googled right side driving and what did I find ?. . . . Advice like. . . visitors are informed that UK drives on the (LHS), that's the left hand side of the road. In the interest of safety, YOU are advised to practise this in your "COUNTRY OF ORIGIN FOR A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE YOU VISIT" ya right! Exactly how would that work? Or how about the transition of a country from LHS to RHS, a governmental announcement, says that the change will happen in phases . . . where taxis and buses will first drive on the RHS with cars and trucks driving on the LHS until 90 days pass. Did they think that thru?
My "road" to the USA is filled with pauses. After being chauffeured for the last time on the left hand side (LHS) of the road, I took a flight from Denpasar, Bali Indonesia to Singapore on Sunday, then changed my original plans to head west (Left) to London, to east (Right) to LA and on to Chicago. This change saves me 6 hours of flight time and extends my stay in Singapore for two days. - a LHS country. So I am "left" to ponder. . . . . do I remember how to DRIVE on the "right" side of the road?
Over the last 8 months, I traveled over 60,000 kilometers as a passenger in cars, on motorbikes and in buses that motor on the "left" side of the road? I am so confused. Is the driver on the left or the right side of the car? I guess, it depends on which way I look at a car. Am I standing in front of the car? Am I in the car? Cars go in all directions, so why do I say the car drives on the left? On the left of WHAT? Whose left? I DO know, when I cross the road in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and England, I LOOK RIGHT, THEN LEFT to cross the road. What about if I am driving?
To calm my confusion I googled right side driving and I found. . . . Advice like. . . "visitors are informed that UK drives on the LHS, that is the left hand side of the road. In the interest of safety, YOU are advised to PRACTISE this in your "COUNTRY OF ORIGIN FOR A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE YOU VISIT." -ya right! Exactly, how would that work? Or, how about the transition of a country from LHS to RHS, an April Fool's announcement written in a British paper, reported the transition from LHS to RHS driving was scheduled to happen in phases. . . where taxis and buses will first drive on the RHS with cars and trucks driving on the LHS until 90 days pass. What? I don't think, I am the only one confused.
Back to my question . . what about if I am driving?. . . . When I am behind the steering wheel, I am on the
Rightside of the car, if most of the car is to my
Left. When I am behind the steering wheel, I am on the
Leftside of the car, if most of the car is to my
Right. So you can guess that LHS Cars drive on RIGHT and RHS Cars drive LEFT!
Okay so I know where I am sitting. . . . Which is the right-side and left-side of the road? To get the answer, I must look at the definition of
The Simple Rule of the Road. . . THE SIMPLE RULE OF THE ROAD, is, I DON'T WANT TO COLLIDE HEAD ON WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. . . SO IF I AM DRIVING MOST OF THE CAR TO the RIGHT SIDE IN A LHS CAR, I MUST STEER TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID COLLIDING WITH ONCOMING VEHICLE (USA and 2/3rds of the World) AND IF I AM DRIVING MOST OF THE CAR TO THE LEFT SIDE IN A RHS CAR, I MUST STEER TO THE LEFT(the other 1/3 and everywhere I visited but Mexico) TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC.
So it would be a lot easier, if someone would just say, DRIVERS, STAY TO the RIGHT in 2/3rds of the world and DRIVERS STAY TO THE LEFT in 1/3rd of the world. . . to avoid head on collisions. But there is one more question. . . . . is there an assumption in this statement???
I wonder if me being Left handed has anything to do with me making this difficult? Cuz, I can't seem to figure out , which is the Left and Right of the road . . . Are we assuming one direction as a starting point? Like North. So 2/3rds of the world, drive on the Right side of the road when heading North,West, East and South and thus counter-clockwise in a turnabout and the other 1/3rd drive on the Left side of the road when heading North, East, South and West and thus clockwise in a turnabout.
I need your help in figuring this out! OR Did I figure it out? I drew paper cars and traveled on a paper road and a few times I had a paper car collision! Please email me if you have any hints or suggestions
. . . This may be the first time, anyone left handed has explored the WORDS BEHIND LEFT Drivers, Drive on the Right and Right Drivers, Drive on the Left. Got that?
. . . . I think I will be a passenger and a pedestrian for a bit!
