To plan or not to plan is not an easy, yes or no question. My answers come from thinking about the kind of trip, I want. Where am I headed? What's my budget? How much money do I budget for buying my way out of frustration or say bad weather?
How about impulse spending? What are my time constraints? Whose joining me and do they freak out with too many plans or too little? Where's the best weather, when? When do the wildebeast migrate and how far is it up my list of must do? Do I need the structure of a group tour, if so when? I encourage you to keep adding to your list. You'll see, what is important to plan and what's not.
A few quick suggestions are to check out travel blogs, specific to the countries that interest you and and maybe the ones you didn't make it on your list, they may surprise you.
One way you can test your fear factor is take a 2-3 hour road trip with out a map. Travel with your senses wide open and experience traveling without a plan and with curiosity. If this is a breeze and you turned off the beaten path several times, you may be someone who ends up, initially planning a few flights. Booking flights segments, gives a loose structure to around the world travel as opposed to a round the world ticket.
If you were out of your comfort zone, taking a few unknown turns, you may end up booking the first month or so of a longer trip to get in the groove. The rest of your route gets planned on the road, using your newly found travel happy skills. The combinations of how much or how little you plan are endless. There is no right way. Everyone learns what's best for them along the way. So take off, senses wide open.
